• WiX: Forcefully launch uninstall previous using CustomAction

  I'm writing a new major upgrade of our product. In my installer I start by finding configuration settings of the previous version, then I'd like to uninstall the previous version. I have found several guides telling me how one should make a MSI suitable for such upgrades. However, the previous was not an MSI. It was not according to best practices. It does, however, in registry HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall{GUID} specify an UninstallString. Using a RegistrySearch I can easy find the command below, which I store in UNINSTALL_CMD. RunDll32 C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\PROFES~1\RunTime\10\01\Intel32\Ctor.dll,LaunchSetup "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{GUID}\setup.exe" -l0x9 -removeonly 4: I cannot get the hang of the CustomAction needed to perform the actual uninstall. <CustomAction Id="ca.UninstPrev" Property="UNINSTALL_CMD" ExeCommand="" /> The MSI logs says: Info 1721. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action: ca.UninstallPrevious, location: RunDll32 C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\PROFES~1\RunTime\10\01\Intel32\Ctor.dll,LaunchSetup "C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information{GUID}\setup.exe" -l0x9 -removeonly, command: Anyone seeing what I am doing wrong here? • Windows Phone 7 ListBox uncustomizable?

  I've just recently started development using Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone and I put in a ListBox. I can't seem to manipulate the formatting. No matter what I do, the background is black/gray, the selected items have a blue border, and there is padding between the items in the listbox (i'm using images). • How to change the margin of code's frame of showexpl.sty when numbers=none?

  Hi all, I want to align the code's frame with the formated text's frame. If the numbers=left,the mission is accomplished by configuring xleftmargin, xrightmargin, framesep, and numbersep. However, when I set numbers=none, I cannot accomplish my mission by configuring those properties. Regardless of the values set to those properties, the code's frame remains unchanged and expands beyond the \textwidth. Please see my code snippet below.   I'm trying to write a report which will join a person, their work, and their hourly wage at the time of work. I cannot seem to figure out the best way to join the person's cost when the date is less than the date of the work. Let's say a person cost $30 per hour at the start of the year then got a $10 raise o Feb 5 and another on Mar 1. 01/01/2010 $30.00 (per hour) 02/05/2010 $40.00 03/01/2010 $45.00 The person put in hours several days which span the rasies. 01/05/2010 10 hours (should be at $30/hr) 01/27/2010 5 hours (again at $30) 02/10/2010 10 hours (at $40/hr) 03/03/2010 5 hours (at $45/hr) I'm trying to write one SQL statement which will pull the hours, the cost per hour, and the hours*cost. The cost is the hourly rate last entered into the system so the cost date is less than the work date, ordered by cost date limit 1. SELECT person.id, person.name, work.hours, person_costs.value, work.hours * person_costs.value AS value FROM person INNER JOIN work ON (person.id = work.person_id) INNER JOIN person_costs ON (person.id = person_costs.person_id AND person_costs.date < work.date) WHERE person.id = 1234 ORDER BY work.date ASC The problem I'm having, the person_costs isn't ordered by date in descending order. It's pulling out "any" value (naturally sorted by record position) which matches the condition. How do I select the first person_cost value which is older than the work date? Thanks!

  My situation is: The code is not mine I have two kinds of database: one is Dad, one is Son. In Dad, I have a table to store JNDI name. I will look up Dad using JNDI, create entity manager, and retrieve this table. From these retrieved JNDI names, I will create multiple entity managers using multiple Son databases. The problem is: Son have thousands of entities. It takes each Son database around 10 minutes to load all entities. If there is 4 Son databases, it will be 40 minutes. My question: Is there any way to load all entities and use them for all entity manager? • Ruby: what is the pitfall in this simple code excerpt that tests variable existence

  I'm starting with Ruby, and while making some test samples, I've stumbled against an error in the code that I don't understand why it happens. The code pretends to tests if a variable finn is defined?() and if it is defined, then it increments it. If it isn't defined, then it will define it with value 0 (zero). As the code threw an error, I started to decompose it in small pieces and run it, to better trace where the error was comming from. The code was run in IRB irb 0.9.5(05/04/13), using ruby 1.9.1p378 First I certify that the variable finn is not yet defined, and all is ok: ?> finn NameError: undefined local variable or method `finn' for main:Object from (irb):134 from /home/paulo/.rvm/rubies/ruby-1.9.1-p378/bin/irb:15:in `<main>' >> Then I certify that the following inline-condition executes as expected, and all is ok: ?> ((defined?(finn)) ? EDIT: Looks like Kohana ORM is not that flexible. ORM is probably not the way to go and works best for completely new projects where the data model can be altered. The reason being that the key names must follow a specific naming convention or else they won't relate in Kohana.

• Background worker not working right

  I have created a background worker to go and run a pretty long task that includes creating more threads which will read from a file of urls and crawl each. I tried following it through debugging and found that the background process ends prematurely for no apparent reason. Is there something wrong in the logic of my code that is causing this. I will try and paste as much as possible to make sense.   I am attempting to encode video using libavcodec/libavformat. I'm trying to change the standard output-example.c from ffmpeg source. The AVI file is created on the disk, but the only sound is encoded. I tried adding a lot of options for x264 from here. All the other codecs works fine, mpeg2, mpeg4, mjpeg, xvid. In addition to specifying the parameters x264, I also set the codec to AVOutputFormat structure. That's all I've done.   When using the CvMat type, the type of data is crucial to keeping your program running. For example, depending on whether your data is type float or unsigned char, you would choose one of these two commands: cvmGet(mat, row, col); cvGetReal2D(mat, row, col); Is there a universal approach to this? If the wrong data type matrix is passed to these calls, they crash at runtime. This is becoming an issue, since a function I have defined is getting passed several different types of matrices. How do you determine the data type of a matrix so you can always access its data? I tried using the "type()" function as such. • How to find Part Time development/IT work?

  I've been working in the IT field now for 10 years. Originally trained as an Engineer, started out with C++ and have been a .Net specialist since beta. Currently seconded to a major city and working in the finance industry as freelance, I really feel like i've hit the glass ceiling. Have been contracting now for 5 years as the company politics and frustration of not being promoted and poor pay rises for excellent work but during the last decade of corporate cost cutting took its toll on my morale. Freelance made all the difference and i've had a very decorated career for good clients. What any Engineering student could ever dream of when starting out. The problem is, it doesn't particularly make me happy. It's good work, and i enjoy the problem solving aspects of it and having something to do each day. However there is always a large overhead of non-technical work and dealing with poor managers etc. I guess the Engineering was always a bit of a mistake i made the best out of, and now having 10 years behind a computer hasn't done wonders for my health or eye sight. In a nutshell i am in the process of retraining as a therapist and would like to open my own clinic. However, never having done this before, the fast pace IT skills outdate and the fact that all my experience and skills are non transferrable, i am a little worried. Any ideas how i can find part time IT work as i build up my business? (it's incredibly hard to find freelancing work that doesn't require long hours and overtime). Or other ideas to make the transition easier, and perhaps backout if it financially doesn't work/or i have enough marketing skills? I'd be interested to hear from people who have made a similar transition, successfully or unsuccessfully. Many thanks

  Hello, I've got problem with java jar files and memory. I use netbeans 6.7 to develop an application and this application need more memory to run because it converts another files. Whenever this application convert a 6-10 mb file, it'll crash. So I set netbeans VM Options : -Xms32m -Xmx256m and the application can convert 6-10mb files with no problem. I Clean and Build the project so it can make a jar file of my application. I run the jar on my computer and use jconsole to monitor the memory. The maximum memory to use by the application shows 256 mb. But whenever I move it to some other computers, it shows 65-66 mb on jconsole and the application will crash when convert 6-10 mb files. So I need to use command prompt : java -jar -Xmx256m myjar.jar to execute the jar with maximum memory Why it can be happen, in my computer the maximum memory shows 256 mb but on another computer 65-66 mb? Can I force another computer to give extra maximum memory to my application? Thank you for your answer. I'm sorry for my inadequate English.   I'm very new to LINQ and struggling to find the answers. I have a simple SQL query. Select ID, COUNT(ID) as Selections, OptionName, SUM(Units) as Units FROM tbl_Results GROUP BY ID, OptionName. The results I got were: '1' '4' 'Approved' '40' '2' '1' 'Rejected' '19' '3' '2' 'Not Decided' '12' Due to having to encrypt all my data in the database I'm unable to do sums. Therefore I have now brought back the data and decrypt it in the application layer. Results would be: '1' 'Approved' '10' '3' 'Not Deceided' '6' '2' 'Rejected' '19' '1' 'Approved' '15' '1' 'Approved' '5' '3' 'Not Deceided' '6' '1' 'Approved' '10' using a simple class I have called back the above results, and put them in a list class. public class results { public int ID {get;set;} public string OptionName {get;set;} public int Unit {get;set;} } I almost have the LINQ query to bring back the results like the SQL query at the top var q = from r in Results group p.Unit by p.ID int g select new {ID = g.Key, Selections = g.Count(), Units = g.Sum()}; How do I ensure my LINQ query also give me the Option Name?   Somehow I've managed to completely bugger the install of postgresql on Ubuntu karmic. I want to start over from scratch, but when I "purge" the package with apt-get it still leaves traces behind such that the reinstall configuration doesn't run properly. After I've done: apt-get purge postgresql apt-get install postgresql It said Setting up postgresql-8.4 (8.4.3-0ubuntu9.10.1) ... Configuring already existing cluster (configuration: /etc/postgresql/8.4/main, data: /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main, owner: 108:112) Error: move_conffile: required configuration file /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main/postgresql.conf does not exist Error: could not create default cluster. Please create it manually with pg_createcluster 8.4 main --start or a similar command (see 'man pg_createcluster'). update-alternatives: using /usr/share/postgresql/8.4/man/man1/postmaster.1.gz to provide /usr/share/man/man1/postmaster.1.gz (postmaster.1.gz) in auto mode. Setting up postgresql (8.4.3-0ubuntu9.10.1) ... I have a "/etc/postgresql" with nothing in it and "/etc/postgresql-common/" has a 'pg_upgradecluser.d' directory and root.crt and user_clusters files. The /etc/passwd has a postgres user; the purge script doesn't appear to touch it. There's been a bunch of symptoms which I work through only to expose the next. Right this second, when I run that command "pg_createcluster..." it complains that '/var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main/postgresql.conf does not exist', so I'll go find one of those but I'm sure that won't be the end of it. Is there not some easy one-liner (or two) which will burn it completely and let me start over?

• Using repaint() method.

When I'm inserting a word and it's correct, the whole window should reload, and JButtons containing letters should be repainted with different style. But somehow repaint() method for the game panel (in Main method) doesn't affect it at all. What am I doing wrong ?   Hello, I'm completely stumped on this one. For some reason when I sort this query by DESC it's super fast, but if sorted by ASC it's extremely slow. • Help me understand entity framework 4 caching for lazy loading

  I am getting some unexpected behaviour with entity framework 4.0 and I am hoping someone can help me understand this. I am using the northwind database for the purposes of this question. I am also using the default code generator (not poco or self tracking). I am expecting that anytime I query the context for the framework to only make a round trip if I have not already fetched those objects. I do get this behaviour if I turn off lazy loading. Currently in my application I am breifly turning on lazy loading and then turning it back off so I can get the desired behaviour. That pretty much sucks, so please help. Here is a good code example that can demonstrate my problem.   I want to use a color picker in my wpf application and I saw a nice looking one on this codeproject page. The control works fine until I want to connect the control to a viewmodel. The CurrentControl property of the ColorPickerControlView seems to be fine. The constructor looks like this: public ColorPickerControlView() { this.DataContext = this; InitializeComponent(); CommandBindings.Add(new CommandBinding(SelectColorCommand, SelectColorCommandExecute)); } In the constructor of the UserControl there is the line this.DataContext = this; I read that is is necessary to bind the dependency properties. Do I override this line when I set my viewmodel to the datacontext and is that why I can't bind to the CurrentColor property? Is there any workaround? Or did I make another mistake?
